Need Learning Ideas for Black History Month?

When I was in the classroom, I always wanted to make content relevant and engaging. Math was always my favorite subject to teach, but I did not like to do math in isolation. One year, we departmentalized our instruction, and I solely focused on math. I had also looped with my students that year, and they enjoyed completing a black history project the year before. They begged me for a black history project this particular year, and I did not have anything already created.  Well... for my students I was willing to go the extra mile. At the time, we were working on fractions and decimal equivalence, and I wanted them to continue working on that skill. I decided to create a timeline project where they would create a very large timeline and that went from 0 to 4 and 1/2. On the timeline, there were dates of significant moments in American history ranging from 1600 to 2013 at the time. They had to complete calculations and conversions to figure out where to plot the dates on the timeline. Afterward, we figured out the actual dates by looking at 0 and 1600.

The students loved the project, and I loved the cross-curricular opportunities the project gave. I also loved this project allowed me to differentiate for my groups.  Since then I have streamlined this project so that it can easily implemented in other classrooms.  I also create a sports version that focused on fractions and decimals between 0 and 1.  Both versions of this project are available for 4th and 5th graders.
